Nativity

Sevilla, 1630 - Óbidos, 1684

The Nativity in the Gaudium Magnum collection may be dated to the early years of Josefa de Óbidos’s activity. It is based on an engraving by Cornelis Bloemaert, published in 1627, which reproduces a painting by his father, Abraham Bloemaert, now in Braunschweig. Josefa made use of engravings throughout her career, but it was in her early years that she followed most closely the models available to her in the extensive collection assembled by her father, the painter Baltazar Gomes Figueira. This is an important work for understanding the painter’s development during the initial years of her production.
