Till-Holger Borchert

Director, Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen, Germany

Till-Holger Borchert is a German art historian, curator, museum director. He is currently Director of the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen. His research focuses on Early Netherlandish painting from the 14th to 16th centuries, especially Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling.

Before moving to Aachen, Borchert spent more than two decades in Bruges. He first curated The Age of Van Eyck for Bruges 2002, later became chief curator of the Groeningemuseum, and in 2014 was appointed Director General of Musea Brugge. In 2020 he co-curated the major Ghent exhibition Van Eyck: An Optical Revolution.

His curatorial work includes major exhibitions such as Hans Memling: Portraits at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Groeningemuseum, and The Frick Collection; From Van Eyck to Dürer in Bruges; Memling: Rinascimento Fiammingo at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome; and the Bruges Triennials of 2015, 2018, and 2021.

He has published widely on Northern Renaissance art, connoisseurship, and the reception of Early Netherlandish painting. Selected books include Van EyckThe Book of MiraclesBosch in DetailDürer in DetailThe Flemish Primitives in Bruges, and Van Eyck: An Optical Revolution.
