Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga: Alessandro Magnasco painting from our Collection showcased in Lisbon
17.09.2024 — 26.01.2025

Beauty, Seduction and Sharing entitles this section showcasing artworks from Gaudium Magnum Foundation. Alessandro Magnasco is an Italian painter of the late Baroque period renowned for his expressive and unique style. Born in Genoa, active in Milan and Florence, the painter conceived an original work full of satirical intention that also reveals a philosophical reflection.

From the collection of the Gaudium Magnum Foundation, the displayed work by this old master depicts a biblical moment from the Old Testament, illustrating a passage from Genesis (40:1-19), where Joseph, unjustly imprisoned by the Pharaoh in Egypt, interprets the dreams of two fellow prisoners, the baker and the cupbearer. The imaginative prison created by Magnasco reflects his distinctive style. In contrast to his contemporaries who used bright colors, he preferred a palette of dark colors and a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. The loose brushstrokes and flashes of bright light accentuate the fantastic element. His figures are small, caricatured, and elongated, highlighted by the technique to evoke spatial dept in architectonic features.

This painting is an example of the artist's ability to capture the emotional intensity of this passage.
